Professor Dr. Francisco Conrado Rosenbusch, was born of German immigrants, in La Banda, Santiago del Estero, Argentina, on April 18th 1887, baptized in the Cathedral of the province’s capital city on July 14th of that same year. He passed away in Buenos Aires on February 15th 1969. In the centenary of his birth the Argentinean veterinary community has honored him by considering him one of the greatest teachers of the profession, milestone of its scientific development, reference for many generations and investigator that gave prestige to the national science.

His education in Argentina
After finishing high school at the Colegio Nacional Central de Buenos Aires, Dr. Francisco Conrado Rosenbusch enrolled in the School of Veterinary Medicine at the National University of La Plata (Argentina) – founded in 1884, the only one in the country at that moment – where he graduated in 1906 as Doctor in Veterinary Medicine, becoming one of the first professionals graduated in Argentina and trained in a branch of the biological sciences of which development was an authentic national priority, due to the enormous increase of a livestock activity totally lacking of animal welfare and production technology.

Education abroad
At the beginnings of 1907 he travelled to Europe, with his family’s economical support, with the purpose of extending his education. He worked and researched in several of the most advanced scientific centers worldwide, and with teachers that are landmarks in the evolution of the knowledge in human and veterinary medicine.

In 1917 he left the Hygiene National Department to organize the “Biological Institute”, created by the Sociedad Rural Argentina (The Argentinean Agricultural Society), together with some other institutions connected to the livestock activity (Railroad, Cold-storage plants, etc.) with the specific purpose of diagnosing and investigating the diseases that were affecting the country’s livestock.

In 1924, when this Biological Institute disappear, he founded the "Instituto de Biología Experimental Agropecuaria" (The agricultural experimental biology Institute), with the same purpose of diagnosing and investigating the animal’s diseases. Later he added the manufacturing of serums, vaccines and eventually veterinary antibiotics.

Al this caused the constitution of an important commercial structure in which Dr. Rosenbusch laid a clearly define characteristic, emerged from his conviction that only veterinaries were trained to commercialize products used in veterinary medicine. The main diseases that he studied were: foot and mouth disease, Brucellosis, Echinococcosis, Bovine Malaria, bad hip in horses, equine meningoencefalitis, dog microfilariasis, toxoplasmosis, blastocystis and dengue.

Dr. Francisco Conrado Rosenbusch passed away in 1969, his son, Dr. Carlos Rosenbusch succeeded his father and run the Institute for three decades, through the most difficult times for the country, and at the beginnings of the 90s he left the management to the present authorities.
